2nd Annual Indoor Clinic and Tournament

We have set a date for our 2nd Annual BGSU Women's Soccer Indoor Event. This year the event will take place on Saturday, Febuary 6th in the Perry Field House. Last year's event was a huge success, so we have expanded the event to include more age groups this year.

U8-U11 will play 4v4 to small goals (no keepers)
U12-U14 will play 3v3 to small goals (no keepers)

A developmental clinic will be held for the two younger groups above.

NEW THIS YEAR:
U15-U18 will play 7v7 to big goals (6v6 + keepers)

Please click the following link to view this year's brochure and registration information.

Current BGSU Women’s Soccer players will be on hand to meet and interact with all those participating in the tournament. We are looking forward to hosting you for this wonderful event!

Happy Holidays!

The BGSU Women's Soccer team recently held their annual Holiday party at Santa's (Andy's), house. There was a non-negotiable entry requirment of arriving in an "ugly christmas sweater" in order to take part in the festivities. Colleen and Sam showed up looking like figurines from the nut cracker, although they also somewhat resembled movie ushers in red coats :) The best christmas sweater of the night had to go to Lauren (Lolo) Livingston though, as she took the time to personally pin christmas decorations onto a cardigan. Her sweater ended up being more "cute" than "ugly". No suprises there!

The white elephant gift exchange brought many laughs again as ususal. Some of the more comical gifts included: A scarecrow to put in your yard, fuzzy socks, a winnie the pooh robe, and a very "interesting" mad libs book. The hot ticket items, that everyone wanted to steal, were the gift cards, blankets, and a cute little purse. All in all, the team had an enjoyable time....Just take a look for yourself!

The team would like to wish all of our supporters a very happy, and safe, holiday season! Please check back in after the New Year!

Kordan and Bland reflect on the Season:

Senior Captains Colleen Kordan and Samantha Bland were recently asked to provide some reflection on the past season to the BGSU school news paper. See below to read their the article that was published in this weeks BG News:

Looking back on four years of playing soccer with the Falcons, senior co-captains Samantha Bland and Colleen Kordan have bittersweet emotions.

They both loved their time playing soccer under coach Andy Richards but now that it is over, both are already missing it.

“I can’t even explain the emotions,” Bland said. “You never think the day actually will come when you’re done with something that you have put so much time into your whole life.

“I’m extremely sad to be done with BGSU soccer, it was one of the best experiences of my life.”

Kordan shares some of the same and some different feelings about finishing her final season.

“I am excited to move onto a new chapter of my life and enjoy things that I couldn’t while I was playing soccer,” Kordan said. “I’m planning on graduating in the spring. It’s an exciting part in my life.”

But Kordan is hung up on some of the way this season panned out.

“The way my senior class and I went out, that’s not how I wanted to be remembered,” Kordan said. “It was my goal to help lead my team to a championship and I wasn’t able to fulfill that goal. It’s sad — soccer has been a part of my life for the past 15 years and now it’s gone. It still hasn’t hit me yet.”

There are a lot of things that Kordan and Bland will take with them now that their season has come to a close and they are on their way to graduation. Richards has definitely left them with some good lessons that apply to both on and off the field.

“Losing makes you appreciate winning,” Bland said. “Don’t be selfish. When you work as a team, you can accomplish so much more than working for yourself.”

But some lessons will be left on the soccer field.

“Always keep the ball low and hard and in the corner,” Bland said.
The seniors also will miss much more from their four years playing.

“Hands down: my teammates,” Kordan said. “It’s funny. You come into college not knowing a single teammate and by the end of your four years, you’ve truly become a family — especially with those you’ve played with for four years. It’s an irreplaceable feeling.”

Bland also will miss her teammates.

“I will miss the girls,” she said. “I have made some of my best friends here — the bus trips, home games and being able to play competitively.”

Now that the season has come to a close, Kordan and Bland have different ideas of how soccer will fit in their lives.

“I’ve never pictured myself as a coach, but who knows,” Bland said. “I definitely want to focus my dietetics career around something sports-related; soccer would be great.”

“I hope to play co-ed and in leagues with my former teammates,” Kordan said. “Maybe one day, I’ll go back to coaching. I hope to stay connected to the BGSU program by attending games and working the summer camp.”

Looking back, one must look at the highlights and accomplishments of these two soccer players. Kordan has accumulated five goals scored along with seven assists in her four years here as a Falcon. She was named to the All-MAC team her freshman year, named co-defensive MVP along with Bland her sophomore year and named First Team All-MAC her junior year.

Bland has scored three goals and two assists in her tenure here at BG. Her defensive accomplishments are even more impressive though, as she has been named the team’s defensive MVP each year with the Falcons.

For these two players, looking back on their memories on the field is very rewarding and emotional. Now that they have left their legacies on the field, they are leaving the world of BG soccer with some advice for the younger players, to help them prosper.

“Always give 100 percent and have fun,” Kordan said. “I remember when I was a freshman the seniors used to tell me, ‘Enjoy it — it’ll be over before you know it.’”

Samantha Bland had a similar message, along with a certain goal she would like the Falcons to carry out.

“Stay in shape, stay out of trouble, don’t get down on yourself,” she said. “And win a flippin’ ring.”

As previously mentioned, the team is hard at work to make winning next season's MAC championship a possibility. ROLL ALONG!

Almond and Stephenson earn Academic All-District Honors

Two Bowling Green State University student-athletes have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV University Division Women's Soccer Team. Juniors Alicia Almond and Katie Stephenson each earned third-team honors.

Stephenson makes the team for the second consecutive year, having been named to the second team in 2008. Almond earns academic all-district honors for the first time.

Almond maintains a 3.95 cumulative grade point average as a health science major. Stephenson, a finance major, has a 3.94 cumulative GPA in her BGSU career to date.

A native of Findlay, Ohio (Findlay HS), Almond was one of just four Falcons to start all 20 matches in 2009. A mainstay on BGSU's back line, she played a total of 1728 minutes, the second-highest total on the team, and scored three points.

Almond scored a goal in the Miami game, and assisted on freshman Keely Chandler's game-winning goal vs. Youngstown State. In her career, Almond has played in 47 matches, making 21 starts, and has seven points on three goals and an assist.

Stephenson, who hails from Lexington, Ohio (Lexington HS), played in all 20 matches in 2009, making 12 starts. Like Almond, Stephenson had three points on a goal and an assist. Her goal came in BGSU's win at Detroit, and she also assisted on Chandler's winner in the YSU match.

In her career, Stephenson has played in 63 of BGSU's 64 matches since her arrival on campus, making 32 starts. She has 16 career points on five goals and six assists.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District University Division Team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated, a student-athlete must hold at least sophomore status, be a starter or key reserve, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher. BG Ends 2009 campaign, Looks ahead to Spring Season

The BG Women's Soccer team ended their season with losses to CMU, EMU, and Rival Toledo over their final games in conference play. The Falcon's eagerly look forward to making improvements during the off season, and will focus now on making gains in the weight room while continuing their academic success in the classroom.

The entire team and the BG coaching staff would like to thank the senior class for a wonderful four years full of many memories. We would like to wish Samantha Bland, Jen Czapka, Kaitlyn Kobe, Colleen Kordan, Stacey Lucas and Carolyn Nesline the best of luck in all of their future endeavors, and look forward to having them involved in the Falcon Soccer program for years to come.

Senior day is Grand with 1-0 over Buffalo

The BGSU Falcons put together a 1-0 win over visiting Buffalo to earn 3 pts toward conference play this past Sunday. Freshman Keely Chandler finished an inswinging corner kick by Megan Amann to give the Falcons an early lead only 6 minutes into the match. The remaining 84 minutes of the match were lopsided, as the Falcons controlled much of the play, outshooting Buffalo 24-8 on the day while also edging the visitors 15-0 on corner kicks.

The Falcon defense posted their second straight shutout, with Alexa Arsenault collecting 4 saves. For her effort in the shut out on Sunday, combined with her excellent play and shutout on Friday vs Kent, Arsenault was awarded the MAC defensive player of the week following the weekend games.

The 2009 Senior Class was honored prior to kickoff for all of their contributions over their 4 seasons of play. This year's senior class includes:Samantha Bland, Jen Czapka, Kaitlyn Kobe, Colleen Kordan, Stacey Lucas and Carolyn Nesline.

BG plays to a 0-0 deadlock with Kent State

The BG Women's Soccer team battled sloppy field conditions and a tough Kent State team on friday night to a 0-0 stalemate. With the tie, the Falcons add another point to their conference standing total going into their game vs Buffalo on Sunday. Alexa Arsenault and the BG defense recorded their 4th shutout of the season, and a total of 7 players played the entire 110 minutes of the match.

BG Plays well in 1-1 Draw with Ohio

The falcons scored first to take a 1-0 lead into halftime against the Bobcats of OU. The Bobcats fought back to make it 1-1 mid-way into the 2nd half, and neither team could find a game winner. The falcons controlled the majority of the play, and looked the better team throughout the match. Going into overtime, Katelyn Turner was sprung in behind the OU defense and had a great strike on goal that beat the keeper, but the ball clanged off the post once, and then again in the ensuing scuffle for the rebound.

The first half goal for the Falcon's was scored by Katelyn Turner, her third of the season. Megan Amann was credited with the assist to Turner, after her finely placed corner kick found the head of Turner in the box.

The Falcon's take on the Zips of Akron next. Game day is set for Sunday, with kickoff at 1:00. The team will be sponsoring a PINK out day, in honor of breast cancer awareness. Pink t-shirts can be purchased at the game, with $1 of the proceeds from each shirt going toward the Susan B Komen foundation.

Miami earns Win over the Falcons

The Miami Redhawks scored a goal just over 2 minutes into the match and would not relinquish the lead in a 4-1 win over the Falcons this past Sunday. Alicia Almond scored the lone goal for the Falcons in spectacular fashion as she hit a well struck ball from 25 yards out. Colleen Kordan was credited with the assist.

The Falcon's return home for a 4 game homestand starting this weekend. The team will take on Ohio (Friday) @ 4:00pm, and Akron (Sunday) @ 1:00pm

Ball State Tops Falcons 1-0

Jacki Eft scored midway through the first half to give host Ball State University a 1-0 win over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Friday afternoon (Oct. 3). The Mid-American Conference match was held at the BSU Soccer Field.

BGSU had a narrow 6-5 advantage in shots on goal, and a whopping 12-2 margin in corner kicks, but could not get a shot past Ball State goalkeeper Nicole Wood. Wood made five saves in goal, and was helped immensely by a 'team save' in the final moments of the match.

The Falcons will remain on the road for a Sunday match against Miami. Kick off is set for 1:00pm.

BG earns first Conference Point over the Weekend

The BG Women's Soccer team played two games on the road this weekend. The team earned a point toward MAC play with a 1-1 draw with Northern Illinois. Alyssa Zuccaro scored the equalizer against NIU (with help from fellow teammate Megan Amann) less then 2 minutes after the team went down 1-0 to the Huskies. The game ended in a 1-1 draw after two overtime periods, despite some great opportunities for the Falcons to score the game winner.

The team looked to earn three points against Sunday's opponent, Western Michigan, but suffered a heart-breaking 3-2 loss with the Broncos scoring the deciding goal with only 54 seconds remaining in the match. On the day, two different falcons found the back of the net. Freshman Sarah VonderBrink scored her first goal of the season, on an assist from Alyssa Zuccaro, and Sophomore Katelyn Turner rounded out the scoring on a Free Kick service from Colleen Kordan.

The Falcons will now travel to Ball State (Friday) and Miami (Sunday) for the second week of nail biting MAC play. Check back in to see how we do!

Leaving the Fun and Sun of Cali

We had a very busy, and fun, Saturday during our stay in California. First, we went for a training session to get some touches on the ball and to get some stretching in. We also took a team picture with the beautiful california landscape in the background before heading back to the hotel.

After practice, the team headed for a quick lunch and shower before heading to Venice beach. What a site that was! The team put their feet in the beautiful pacific ocean and had many laughs while people watching. Venice beach is, by far, the strangest place we have ever visited while traveling! Assistant Coach Bri got in on the fun and helped a street performer with his act...he was a glass walker! After the quick stop in Venice Beach, the team traveled to Carson City to the infamous Home Depot Soccer Center to watch the one and only David Beckham and the LA Galaxy take on Toronto FC. The Galaxy won 2-0 and Beckham was exciting to watch (and to look at!)

We ended our trip with an unfortunate 2-0 loss to a very good UC-Irvine team, who are regionally ranked. Despite our two losses, the team played some very good, competitive soccer, with everyone on the team contributing throughout the weekend.

We returned home to BG with a hunger to start MAC play this coming weekend. We will take on our first MAC foe at NIU Friday, and then will travel to Western Michigan for our Sunday match.

Check back soon for video and photos of our California Trip!

Rollin' Along in Cali

Yesterday we had a walk through on UC Riverside's field. Despite the 101 degrees heat, we had a good practice. Before the game we hit up one of our team favorites-Chilis!

We played our first game in Cali against UC Riverside and lost 2-0. We fought a hard battle and connected well, but didn't get the result we wanted. We hope to come out strong on Sunday and bring a win back to BG!

We are heading off to practice soon, then we have a fun day planned ahead. Check up later to hear about what we did today in Cali-ROLL ALONG.

We made it!

Well, we made it to Cali. 8 hours after begining our journey we arrived in the LAX airport and promptly piled into 5 "soccer mom" vans to start our tour of California. After a quick and delicious meal at P.F. Changs, the group headed over to Hollywood to take part in the taping of the Jimmy Kimmel show. The traffic did not cooperate though, and we were forced to give up our Kimmel tickets because we did not meet the cut-off time for arrival :(

We spent some time strolling down the Hollywood Walk of Fame and saw the Kodiak theater as well. We also had our first celebrity siting! The cast of the TV show "House" were gathered on a Red Carpet outside of some sort of premier.

Well, its getting late. We better get some rest because we have some sun tanning at the pool to do tomorrow...don't tell Andy!

The Trip Begins...

Eager to get to California, we boarded a BGSU Shuttle bus to go to the Detroit Airport. Arriving slightly late, Amie was almost left behind but we quickly realized it and opened the bus door for her right before leaving. The wait in the airportt\ was a short one and getting through security didn't take as long as we thought it would, despite people forgetting that you can't bring bottles of water through the checkpoint (Kelsey and vondy!). We're about to board our plane to fly to Chicago and after a short lay-over, WE'LL BE IN CALIFORNIA!!!! :)

BG Improves to 4-3-0, Beats YSU

Sunday afternoon, the BGSU Lady Falcons earned a 2-0 victory over the Penguins of Youngstown State. Freshman Keely Chandler was the obvious player of the game, having scored both goals in the win. Chandler finished a great back post chip that was provided by Alicia Almond during the first half, and then tallied her 2nd goal by slipping the ball into the net off a Megan Amann cross during the second half.

In the match, the team also recorded their 3rd shutout on the young season, with Alexa Arsenault and Becca Ison splitting time in goal. A total of 22 BGSU players saw game action on the day.

The weekend also ushered in some fun as the team volunteered hours for the annual BG Black Swamp Art Festival. Video of their volunteer experience can be found below.

BG comes undone against St. Bonaventure

The "Bonnies" of St. Bonaventure scored off a corner kick in the 17th minute of play and would not relinquish the 1-0 lead for a win over the Falcons on Friday night. The loss snapped a 10-0-1 home unbeaten streak for the Falcons, and dropped the team to a 3-3-0 record. The team looks to bounce back for Sunday's contest against the Penguins of Youngstown State. Kick off is set for 1:00pm at BGSU's Cochrane field.

Come support us at our last home game before we begin a 3 weekend campaign of away games!

BG earns 2 wins and 2 shutouts

The BGSU Women's Soccer Team put together a very successful two-win weekend. On Friday, the team traveled up to Detroit-Mercy to take on the Titans. BG held the Titans scoreless for 90 minutes, while finding the back of the opposition's net 4 times. Colleen Kordan, Leah Johnson (1 goal and 2 assists on the day), Katelyn Turner and Katie Stephenson each tallied a goal during the contest, while Alexa Arsenault and Becca Ison combined for the shutout.

The team continued its winning ways on Sunday as they handed IPFW a 1-0 loss, with Megan Amann scoring the game-winner in the 60th minute. The assist on Amann's goal went to both Katelyn Turner and Megan Moran. Goalkeeper Alexa Arsenault played all 90 minutes between the pipes, recording 5 saves, including a clutch breakaway save in the second half, to earn the shutout. With the shutout, Alexa moves into first place on the all-time shutout list, having recorded a total of 18 career shutouts.

The Brown and Orange will continue their home-stand next weekend as they take on St Bonaventure on Friday (5:00) and Youngstown State on Sunday (1:00).

Come support the team as we defend our home turf!

MSU tops BGSU in Away Match

The Michigan State Spartans found the net 4 times in their win over BGSU on Sunday. The Spartans were a tremendous threat offensively and they looked in top form during the 90 minute game. At many times during the game, the Falcons were able to get a rythm and good ball movement around the pitch, but were unable to break down the solid defending of MSU.

BG's next match will be away at the University of Detroit-Mercy this Friday. Game time is set for 4:00pm.

Come support the Falcons at our next home game, Sunday 9/6 at 1:00 vs IPFW.

BG Defends Home Turf, Beats ISU 2-1

The BGSU Women's Soccer team earned a goal early in each half of Friday's matchup with Indiana State and were able to come out on top 2-1 in a rain soaked and aggressive match. Sophomore Alyssa Zuccaro was assissted by Jackie Tamerlano for the first goal of match, and then had a hand in BG's second goal, dishing it off to fellow forward Megan Amann who earned the game winner in the 2-1 win.

Incliment weather forced its way through the area, and caused for a delay in the game shortly before the half-time. Prior to the delay, the falcons were flying all over the field, and were able to control much of the run of play. However, following the break, ISU were able to re-gather themselves and put up a very good fight throughout the rest of the match. The BGSU offense put together many scoring opportunities and should have converted a few more of their chances on the night.

Overall though, the team is making great strides in their preparation for conference play later in the season. Goalkeepers Laura Arnold and Becca Ison both made their collegiate debuts in Friday night's match. Laura made an outstanding pk save to keep BG ahead 1-0 at half-time, and Becca recorded 6 saves in a very busy second half to keep BG on top after ISU found the back of the net on a corner.

The team will travel to Michigan State on Sunday to take on the Spartans, in what will likely be a very tough game against a highly skilled MSU team. Kick-off is set for 1:00pm

BGSU Opens up the Season against OSU

Last night, the BGSU Women's Soccer team traveled down to OSU to kick off the 2009 season. The 2009 campaign looks to be a successful one, despite last nights 2-0 loss to the Buckeyes of OSU. The team seems to have gotten out all of their jitters, having played a much better second half by creating some scoring opportunities against the buckeyes. The team now looks to bounce back with a home game against Indiana State scheduled for next Friday, August 28th at 5:00.

Goalkeeper Alexa Arsenault played a great game between the pipes against the buckeyes, thwarting several scoring chances produced by the home team. Senior Jen Czapka and Sophmore Katelyn Turner were also bright spots for the team.

Camp Shenannigans!

BGSU Women's Soccer Summer Camp just finished and was a huge success in both the eyes of the current players and coaches and in the eyes of those campers who were in attendance. The camp included a multitude of both individual and team instruction, while also including a light hearted atmosphere where banter and joking among the counselors and campers was a regular occurrence, and certainly created many opportunities for sharing laughs...which was usually at the expense of the current players and coaches-those campers can be ruthless! :)

Here is a top ten list of things learned at camp last week.

10.) Even though the counselors are current players in college, they will always relish the opportunity to act like a kid again and will never turn down a chance to pull off a practical joke!

9.) "Doctor, Doctor" is by far the best camp game ever. Be careful when joining though, it gets intense!

8.) Never ask Sam to tell any jokes. She doesn't know any good ones.

7.) If you see a mob of cheerleaders walking to lunch, always run to get in front of them! Don't worry, they will get out of the way.

6.) Note to counselors: Be careful when the campers ask to style your hair. You might end up looking like Princess Leah! J/K campers, you did a fantastic job :)

5.) Pirates say "Arrrrrhhh", Sailors say "Ahoy Matey!"

4.) Betting for a pack of skittles is always a good idea. Good job Little Peeps!

3.) Faith does a great monkey impression.

2.) Never play a game with Scott. He will always cheat!

1.) Hanging out with the current players and coaches always guarantees a good laugh. You are all a part of the BGSU family now, so keep in touch and let us know if you ever want to come to a game!

We are looking forward to seeing you this fall to cheer us on as we start our quest to take back the MAC championship! Keep your eyes out for information on our Winter Clinic and dates for next Summer's Camp. We will get the information to you as we finalize things!

Alumni Game

The last spring season game for 2009 had the team slated against the BGSU Alumni team. The alumni team, comprised of past BGSU Women's Soccer players, took to their old home field for a friendly game against the current BGSU Women's Team. Although the alumni tried their best to muster up their previous playing form, the current BGSU team was just too much for them to handle. In the end, the alumni were defeated by a score of 6-2, but they had a great time both being able to play again and being able to reconnect with each other. After the game there was talk about the game next year, and the Alumni decided that next year was the year where they come to play in better shape. There was definitely some "wind sucking" by some of the former players. When did the field get so big?! It was also decided that touching a soccer ball or putting their cleats on again before the big day comes again next year would be a good idea :)

We will have to see!

Past Alumni who participated in the game were:
Gina Rossi, Bri Eisenhard, Kristin MacDonald, Christy Zabek, Ashley Wentzel, Kristy Coppes, Michelle Lisy, Nikki Pucillo, Katie Barnett, Megan Tice, Rachael Ross, Lindsay Carter, Tiffany Hansen, and Danielle Cygan.

Celebrating the Season with our Annual Team Banquet

The BGSU Women's Soccer team gathered together recently to celebrate last year's season. The Annual Banquet is put on by the team's coaches, and is meant to both honor the outgoing seniors again, as well as to serve as a thank you to all of those people who contribute to making the Women's Soccer program successful. Team parents, administrators, advisers, and support staff were all invited for a night of fun and reflection on the good times that were had in the fall. Many laughs were shared while watching the highlight and blooper videos ( and somehow a dedication to Coach Scott also appeared. I wonder who made the highlight videos??)

See below for one of the videos viewed at the banquet!!

After each of the seniors shared their outgoing thoughts and passed their wisdom on to the remaining players, the coaching staff handed out the program's annual awards. The recipients of this year's awards, voted on by players and coaches, were as follows:

* MVP - DEFENSE: Samantha Bland
* MVP - MIDFIELD: Brianne Eisenhard
* MVP - OFFENSE: Alyssa Zuccaro
* MOST IMPROVED PLAYER: Megan Amann
* Leah Eggleton "HUSTLE" AWARD: Katie Stephenson
* Leslie Dawley "FIGHTING FALCON" AWARD: Susan Hunter

BG Reaches out to the Community

The BGSU Women's Soccer team spent some time over the past weekend volunteering their efforts while lending a helping hand to the Habitat for Humanity foundation. The team set off early on Saturday morning and would work well into the afternoon on various aspects of a Habitat for Humanity housing project.

The current players helped clear trash from a neighborhood, helped build a couple of sheds, and also helped with painting needs. The girls had a great time, but should probably stick to honing their skills on the soccer field. We had to do a hand check to make sure that no one lost any fingers during the shed building. Somehow, hammering in a nail is always harder than it looks!

Click on one of the videos below to see some of the fun they had during their experience!
